Gujo Hachiman Castle is a beautiful white mountain castle sitting on top of Mount Hachiman, looking down over the town of clear rivers. The walk up to the castle feels like a journey through history. Along the way, you can see the famous Sogi Sui Spring, the town’s historic waterways, ancient stone walls, and the castle keep appearing little by little between tall cedar trees. The castle keep was rebuilt in wood in 1933 and blends perfectly into the mountainside. The famous writer Ryotaro Shiba once praised its beauty, writing that he climbed the mountain knowing he would find the most beautiful mountain castle in Japan here. From the top floor, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the castle town, which is uniquely shaped like a fish between the Yoshida and Kodara rivers. You can also see the Oku-Mino mountains and beautiful valleys that change with the seasons. On autumn and winter mornings, a sea of clouds sometimes surrounds the castle, making it look like a “Castle in the Sky. “This wonderful view, uniting the mountains, water, and town, is the best part of visiting the castle.
