Gujo Odori is one of Japan’s three prestigeous Bon Odori festivals, intertwined with the daily life of Gujo Hachiman for over 400 years. On summer nights, the entire town transforms into a stage. As the echoes of traditional songs and shamisen ring out from the wooden tower, everyone naturally joins the dancing circle. The dance steps are simple and easy to learn, and the rhythmic clicking sound of geta (wooden clogs) echoes throughout the streets. The ultimate highlight is the “Tetsuya Odori” (all-night dancing) held for four days starting August 13th. As the icon of the festival, people dance from dusk to dawn. Waves of dancers flow endlessly over lantern-lit cobblestone streets, wrapping the entire town in an unforgettable energy that lasts through the night.
